SUBSTANTIAL SAVINGS IN FLOATING TANK ROOF PROJECT

A 4,000m² floating tank roof at a petrochemical plant required to have a complete refurbishment as it was currently suffering from extensive wear and tear damage.

The low temperature conditions of the winter season, high humidity and occasional rain showers made this an extremely difficult project for the originally specified 3-coat epoxy paint system.
The client gave a 24 day time schedule for completion of this project.

Following many other successful applications by the site contractor, Epo-chem™ RL 500PF, a wet & rust tolerant epoxy coating, was specified as the coating system to be used for this project.

The tank roof was high pressure washed to remove salt deposits and other contamination, with the areas suffering from heavy corrosion being spot blasted or mechanically prepared down to metal.

Spot blasted areas were coating with one coat of Epo-chem™ RL 500PF @ 150 microns.

Excess water was then removed before two coats of Epo-chem™ RL 500PF were applied @ 150 microns each over the entire tank roof.

During the contract, the freshly coated areas experienced many occasions of heavy rain and many puddles of cold water forming withing hours of application. The Epo-chem™ RL 500PF was left untouched to cure underwater without the necessity of any remedial work. Chemco also offered the client a long-term guarantee, despite the cold condition.

This is unique and completely unheard of in the history of tank roof applications.

The planned 24 day program was actually completed in only 12 days, offering huge cost savings as compared to other conventional paints were long delays would have occurred due to the bad weather.

Since the successful completion of this contract, the same solution has now been specified and has been applied across a number of tank roofs on various other sites for the same petrochemical company.

By using this unique solution, the following benefits were achieved:

  • Surface preparation flexibility
  • No delays due to adverse weather conditions
  • Applicable to wet and rusty surface
  • Can be applied in any environmental condition
  • Significantly reduced downtime
  • Long-term guarantee
  • Substantial time and cost savings
