Underwater Bridge Refurbishment

A New Build bridge required for a protective coating system which could offer long-term corrosion protection. A short time frame of 2 days was given for project completion.

Grit blasting was not permissible due to the damage it would cause to the surrounding environment. Full encapsulation would also incur a high cost and would significantly increase the project duration.

Above the water line the substrate was high pressure water jetted (500bar). Two coats of wet & rust tolerant epoxy Epo-chem™ RL 500PF was then applied.

Below the water line, the substrate was prepared using mechanical methods. This was followed by one primer coat of solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant epoxy Epo-chem™ RS 500P and one topcoat of Chemco’s specialised solvent-free underwater coating system Diver-cote™ RA 500UW-LV.

The project was successfully completed to the great satisfaction of the client and within the strict 2 day time frame given for the project. This project could only be completed within 2 days by using Chemco’s unique solution. The same process will now be used for more bridges and other similar structures for this client.

By utilising this innovate solution, the following benefits are can be achieved:

  • Unique solution only offered by Chemco
  • Excellent adhesion to sub-standard substrate conditions expected underwater
  • No grit blasting
  • Significantly reduced contract duration
  • Substantial time and cost savings
