Marine Coatings By Vessel Area

Vessels trading the high seas simply keep the world moving. Two thirds of the world’s surface is sea water and quite simply 80% of the world’s trading goods are carried by ships of all designs.
They are mostly built of steel and rely on coatings to prevent the onset of severe corrosion which can, if not maintained, reduce the vessel’s lifespan dramatically and if ignored, can lead to costly steel replacement or downgrading by the insurers.

Chemco's solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant marine coatings were designed with great flexibility; the main advantages being that any method of surface preparation, i.e. mechanical, HP and UHP water wash, dry or wet grit blasting can be utilised. There is also no requirement for ventilation or dehumidification; reduced H&S consideration and no fire hazards for storage or application.

Chemco marine coatings have passed the most stringent IMO tests (uniquely on the rusty and wet & rusty steel) and have been approved by ABS and Lloyds for maintenance on new build (including on shop primed steel). They are also FDA approved for food and beverage, dry cargo and potable water.

1. Ballast Tank Coatings

Ballast tanks and double bottoms are areas of complex steel structure with poor access and permanent condensation. Chemco's solvent-free wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P and solvent-free, wet tolerant, glassflake epoxy topcoat Epo-chem™ RA 500M are perfectly suited for small patch repairs or complete refurbishment.

2. Underwater and Boottop

Chemco solvent-free systems offer long-term, maintenance-free protection of up to 25 years.
For underwater section, utilise solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P with smooth glassflake topcoat to reduce drag with excellent impact and abrasion resistance.

For ice breakers, utilise super smooth, abrasion and impact resistant, solvent-free, ceramic epoxy system Ceram-chem™ RP 500.

Boottop: simply water wash and apply Epo-chem™ RS 500P.
All topcoats are scrubbable.

3. Topsides and Boottop

All areas are primed with solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P followed by application of one coat of Epo-chem™ RC 500GTC an acrylic epoxy, UV resistant colour topcoat.
Alternatively, use multi-purpose, wet & rust tolerant, UV resistant Epo-chem™ RL 500PF.
For additional impact and abrasion resistance (e.g. fender areas) topcoat with solvent-free, ceramic epoxy Ceram-chem™ RP 500.
All areas and coatings can be over-coated without the need for grit blasting.

4. Deck Coatings

Quick and fast solutions, including one-coat system, offering long-term protection for severe abrasion, impact and chemical spillage. Can be made to non-slip or anti-slip with flexibility of application in all weathers.

5. Cargo Holds and Cargo Tanks

Flexible surface preparation and application utilising wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P and solvent-free, wet tolerant glassflake epoxy Epo-chem™ RA 500M with good chemical resistance and FDA approvals. The systems offer long-term protection for carriage of coal, iron ore, grain, fuel, crude oil, potable water and other cargos. Major repairs of badly damaged, corroded and worn tanks utilising Chemco's unique fibreglass system, eliminating the need for metal replacement.

6. Accommodation Coatings

Extremely quick, environmentally friendly, odourless, single pack acrylic water-based system (Fast-guard™ RN 500P, Fast-guard™ RN 500TC);  which is fire retardant with extensive colour range, can be applied direct to existing systems without the need for major surface preparation. If a primer is required, solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant Epo-chem™ RS 500P  can be utilised.

7. Internal Corridors/Flooring

A range of solvent-free, water-based, light or heavy duty flooring systems. 

Use solvent-free, wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P and solvent-free, wet tolerant glassflake epoxy         Epo-chem™ RA 500M if required. Lightweight levelling compound (Nano-lite™ ) and special topcoats (Easi-flor™ RX 800Chem-deck™ RG 800, Diamond-top™ ) are available for specialist applications. Other specialist systems specifically designed for galley spaces, refrigeration rooms, wet rooms and shower areas.

8. Potable Water Tank Coatings

Usually situated in difficult access areas, maintenance and refurbishments of the water tanks are extremely difficult.Utilising Chemco's solvent free, wet & rust tolerant primer Epo-chem™ RS 500P and solvent-free, wet tolerant, glassflake epoxy topcoat Epo-chem™ RA 500M specifically designed for fast, easy, odourless application without disruption to engineers and crew. Epo-chem™ RA 500M offers very good chemical resistance and can therefore be utilised for potable/grey water, oil, settling, mud and brine tanks.
